well i don't have a picture but all it says is to find the value of the vaariable and the angle measures ... they have to add up to 180

scratch that. "angle 1 equals 3x and measure of angle 3 equals (7x-40)."
angle 1- 3•x
angle 3- 7•x-40
use the x in angle 3 and multiply it by 3.
angle 1- 3•x
angle 3- 7•x-40
use the x in angle 3 and multiply it by 3.

When you first typed it, there was not enough information.
Then in your 7:42 post you stated that they add up to 180°, (they would form a straight line)
Well, that makes it very easy ....
3x + 7x-40 = 180
10x = 220
x = 22
so one angle is 3x = 3(22) = 66°
the other is 7x-40 = 7(22)-40 = 114°
(notice they add up to 180°)
