a chemist has an 18% acid solution and a 36% acid solution. How many liters of each of these solutions should be mixed together to make 24L of 30% solution?

x liters of 18% acid has .18x liters of acid
y liters of 36% acid has .36y liters of acid

24 liters of 30% acid has .24*30 liters of acid

x+y = 24

.18x + .36(24-x) = .30*24
.18x + 8.64 - .36x = 7.2
.18x = 1.44
x = 8

so, 8L of 18% + 16L of 36% = 24L of 30%
