The medical assistant was probably looking for fame and prestige. However, his/her actions were totally unethical and illegal.

And, having three children who are doctors, I can tell you that it will not be the medical assistant that will be sued. The doctor will pay dearly, maybe with his license, but certainly with his bank account.
