If P = 2x + 2y and xy=400, then the perimeter is P(x)=2x + 800/x. In a pre-calc course you could only be expected to find the minimum value of P(x) by inspection of a graph. See the "graph of p = 2x + 800/x from 0 to 40" at wolfram alpha. OR, by creativity
