The states of Jordan are called governorates (muhafazat, singular - muhafazah in Arabic). Their name are: Ajlun, Al 'Aqabah, Al Balqa', Al Karak, Al Mafraq, 'Amman, At Tafilah, Az Zarqa', Irbid, Jarash, Ma'an, and Madaba.
The Arabic name al-Karak derives from Aramaic karka "the walled city"
