a student tries to open a door at a distance of 1 cm from the hinge at a distance of 10 cm from the hinge and at a distance of 50 cm from the hinge why is a larger force required at 1 cm than at 50 cm?

You need a certin torque (force x lever arm distance from the hinge) to move the door. You need most force when the lever arm distance is least.
