Use the five steps for problem solving.

Enrollment at a particular online university is 11,600. There are seven times as many students who work full time as there are students who do not. How many students work full time and how many do not?

Which part of this do you not understand?

Let x = the number of students who do not work full time.

x + 7x = 11,600
8x = 11,600
x = 1,450

Try this:

Let the number of students who do not work be x
then the number of students who work = 11600-x

You said:
"There are seven times as many students who work full time as there are students who do not"
or
The number of students who work is 7 times the number of students who don't work ----> 11600 - x = 7x

or 7x + x = 11600

which is the equation that Ms Sue gave you
