                In conclusion, the novel creates an oppressive environment where the men in the asylum are ruled by the Nurse. She uses her powers to make the men fearful, passive and emasculated victims. The Nurse wants a society of order, conformity, discipline and control. She represents the “Combine” – the system that controls society.  The Combine always wins even with people rebelling against it. From history to literature, people are acquiescent, so that it is easy for dictators such as Hitler and the Nurse to dominate them.
