find the vertex,focus, direction of the parabola. use a graphing utility to graphthe parabola:
1) x^2-2x+8y+9=0
2) y^2-4y-4y=0
3) x=1/4(y^2+2y+33)
4)(x+1/2)^2=4(y-1)
5) y= 1/4(x^2-2x+5)
1) x^2-2x+8y+9=0
2) y^2-4y-4y=0
3) x=1/4(y^2+2y+33)
4)(x+1/2)^2=4(y-1)
5) y= 1/4(x^2-2x+5)

not calculus, algebra
completing the square
I will do one
x^2 -2 x = -2y - 9
note, big x is negative y so opens down, sheds water
-2/2 = -1
(-1)^2 = 1
so add 1 to both sides
x^2 - 2 x + 1 = -2y - 8
(x-1)^2 = -2 (y+4)
vertex at (1,-4)
4a = -2
a = -1/2
so focus at -4.5
