Well, his initial position gives you the KE at the bottom, just before grabbing her. mgh=1/2 mv^2 or v= sqrt2gh
Now, when grabbing, figure conservation of momentum
(M+m)Vf=M(sqrt2gh) where M is his mass, m her mass. Find Vf.
Now, knowing the Vf, calculate the KE..
and set it equal to final GPE
1/2 (m+M)vF^2=(m+M)g*hf
solve for hf
a lot of algebra.
Now, when grabbing, figure conservation of momentum

sqrt2 is the square root of 2, approximately 1.414
