I'm really not getting how to solve these chemical equations. If someone could explain to me their method of solving. I know you have to list the number of reactants and products for each side but I get confused what you add and what determines what you add. Stuff like that.

I think you are asking how to predict the products of a chemical reaction. I assume, then, that you know how to balance the equation once the products are known.
In general, there are KINDS of reaction. You need to recognize what they are. For example, the equation you wrote is a hydrocarbon + oxygen. The products are always CO2 + H2O.
Here is a site that talks about different kinds of reactions. You memorize the kinds of reactions and that allows you to write products for hundreds of reactions. I think there may be a few other types but this will get you started.
