Solve the equation
(u-1)^2=2u^2-3u-29
for u .

u^2 - 2u + 1 = 2u^2 - 3u - 29
u^2 - u - 30 = 0

This does not factor.

Using the quadratic formula,
x =(-b +- (sqrt(b^2 - 4ac))/2a

a = 1, b = -1, c = -30
x = 1 +- (sqrt(-1^2 - 4(1)(-30))/2
x = (1 +- (sqrt(1 + 120))/2
x = (1 +- (sqrt(121))/2
x = (1 +- 11)/2
x = (1 + 11)/2 = 6
x = (1 - 11)/2 = -5
