Write Home Depot’s 2002 sales and 2006 sales in scientific notation.
2002: (5.82×10^10)
2006: (9.08×10^10)
This part I got. but can someone help me with the second part...
1) Find the increase in sales from 2002 to 2006.
I think the answer is:
(9.08×〖10〗^10 )-(5.82×〖10〗^10 )=3.26×〖10〗^10
If so then answer this:
2)What was the percent growth in Home Depot’s sales from 2002 to 2006? Do all your work by using scientific notation.

So the precentage increase is
3.26×10^10 x 1 x 10^2/(5.82×10^10)
3.26×10^10 x 1 x 10^2/(5.82×10^10)

Can you answer where that came from?

Dr Russ
percentage increase is
increase x 100/starting amount.
I have put 100 as 1x10^2 as you have been asked to work in scientific notation.

Thanks for the help.
Are you sure though that it is not the change in value divided by the current value?
Using what you told me i got a 56% change in value. And 9.08x10^10 is clearly not more than 50% of the original value of 5.26x10^10. Otherwise the new value would have to be over 10.52x10^10.

I agree with Dr Russ
the percentage increase
= (9.08 x10^10 - 5.82 x 10^10 )/(5.82 x 10^10)
= .5601
or 56% increase
check:
156% of 5.82 x 10^10
= 1.56(5.82 x 10^10
= 9.08 x 10^10
the percentage increase
= (9.08 x10^10 - 5.82 x 10^10 )/(5.82 x 10^10)
= .5601
or 56% increase
check:
156% of 5.82 x 10^10
= 1.56(5.82 x 10^10
= 9.08 x 10^10
