What is a wood clap used for in sewing ? thank you

I've been sewing for over 50 years, and I've never heard of a wood clap or a wood CLAMP. I did find some sites that have antique wood clamps for sale, but none of them were helpful.
A wood clamp might be an embroidery hoop.
