Question
How many grams of oxygen gas (O2) will it take to oxidize 1 pound of iron metal? Explain.

We need to start with a balanced equation. So you need to balance
Fe + O2 -> Fe2O3
(asuming the oxide produced is Fe2O3)
next convert 1 lb to grams
1 pound = 453.6 grams
next work out the number of moles of Fe
atomic mass = 55.8
so number of moles =453.6 g/55.8 g mole^-1
the equation will tell you how many moles of O2 react with one mole of Fe, hence calculate the number of moles of O2 that react with
453.6 g/55.8 g mole^-1
of Fe
One mole of O2 has molar mass of 32 g mole^-1
hance calculate the mass (grams) of O2 needed.

454 gr iron in 1 lb
55.847 g/mol weight FE
454/55.847 8.129353 moles of iron
ratio is 1 Fe to 2 O
8.13 x3 24.39 div 4 6.0975 moles of O2
6.0975 x 32g/mol 195.12 of oxygen required
Is this correct?
