"Too much power"is a relative term. I know folks who think states have too much power now:
States say you can only have one wife at a time. States say kids can have/or not have access to birth control. States say you have to lock up your guns. States say gays cannot marry. States say some religions can put their religious symbols on government buildings. And the list goes on, and one.
So, you have to explore what is too much power.

You need to clarify whether you mean power of the federal government of state governments. Take a look at the imprisonment of Japanese-American citizens during WW2. High on the list should be the segregation and denial of civil rights of blacks, mainly in the South. You might also consider the eviction of Indians from their native lands. Do a search of "trail of tears" and "wounded knee". Now we seem to losing rights of privacy and habeas corpus as concerns about homeland security take precedence.
