First you need to jot down some ideas why YOU think the Second Amendment is important to us.

A well-regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

What is a "well-regulated militia"?

Why should people be able to "keep and bear arms"?

I suggest you start your essay by quoting the Amendment and defining those key terms. Then go into a little of the historical background of this Amendment. Why was it included in the Bill of Rights?

The body of your essay should relate this history with today's society. What does a well-regulated militia do today? Why is it necessary that people be allowed to bear arms today? Does the security of a free state depend upon citizen soldiers?
