Why is it a good idea for a teacher to make their students take turns reading the first couple chapters of a novel out loud as a class before the teacher assings the rest of the novel to be read on their own?

First of all, it gets everyone started on the assignment. That way they are more apt to finish it. Reading outloud is a good way to find out who has trouble reading, being heard, phrasing, etc. This is something I often did with literature! You can also tell who understands what is being read by the way it is read outloud.
