At the local fire station they have different lengths of fire hose. the shortest is half the length of the middle-sized one, and one fifth of the length of the longest one. if i connect the three different hose lengths together i make a hose 120m long. how long is the shortest hose? how long is the middle hose? how long is the longest hose? please show workings. thanks

Let x = length of smallest hose
x + 2x + 5x = 120
Solve for x.
x + 2x + 5x = 120
Solve for x.

think of it this way
trial and error
x+ 2x + 5x = 120.
think of numbers that could add up this amount.
like 15, 30, 75.
easy.

Let x be the length of the shortest hose.
According to the problem, the middle-sized hose has a length that is twice as long as the shortest hose. Therefore, the length of the middle-sized hose is 2x.
Also, the length of the longest hose is five times as long as the shortest hose. Therefore, the length of the longest hose is 5x.
When the three hoses are connected together, their lengths add up to 120 m.
x + 2x + 5x = 120
Simplifying this equation, we get:
8x = 120
Dividing both sides by 8, we get:
x = 15
Therefore, the length of the shortest hose is 15 m, the length of the middle-sized hose is 30 m, and the length of the longest hose is 75 m.
