If the length of a rectangle is increased by 120%, and its width is decreased by 20%, what happens to the area of the rectangle.

old length --x
old width -- y
old area = xy

new length -- 1.2x
new width -- .8y
new area = (1.2x)(.8y) = .96xy

new area is reduced by 4%
