How are stories used as a method of coping/a means of survival in Yann Martel's "Life of Pi" and Tim O'Brien's "The Things They Carried"? Specific examples please.

I'm only familiar with O'Brien's book. Didn't his stories tell of the ways different men coped, physically and emotionally, with the Vietnam War?
