I don't think the Exxon-Valdez oil spill was a turning point. Nothing changed -- except for the death of a lot of wild life. The recent BP explosion and Gulf oil spill is a good example of how nothing changed in that business.
In 1989, the U.S. had been involved in a Cold War for over 40 years. The 1989 events in Eastern Europe effectively brought an end to the Cold War. That was a turning point because the U.S. didn't have to spend billions of dollars to defeat the Soviet Union in the Cold War.
What would be one major turning point in US history for 1989?
One website said it was: Dismantling of the Berlin Wall, the election of Solidarity in Poland, and the fall of the Eastern European economies signal the collapse of the Soviet Union
But those aren't US turning points...
Would it be the oil spill?

If I had to pick one major turning point would it be:
the fall of the Eastern European economies
Significance: signal the collapse of the Soviet Union so the U.S. did not have to spend money to defeat the Soviet Union. and an end to the Cold War?
