South Africa gained its independence from Britain in 1910, but this did not lead to freedom and equality for all its people. Although the country became a self-governing nation, the laws and systems that were put in place still favored the white population. The government introduced policies that discriminated against black South Africans and other racial groups, preventing them from voting or having equal rights. This meant that even though South Africa was independent, it was not fair or equal for everyone. Many people struggled under these unfair laws, leading to protests and resistance movements. It took many years of hard work and struggle before apartheid was officially ended in the 1990s and true democracy was established. Thus, independence did not automatically mean freedom and equality for all South Africans.
