Atoms are held together by ionic or covalent forces (or a combination of the two) to form molecules. Molecules in a liquid or held together by intermolecular forces (dipole-dipole bonds, hydrogen bonds, surface tension, London forces, ion-dipole forces, etc. Solids are held together by the lattice structure of the solid.
