upon his shoulders, unseen by those
who only glance, who only see
the smirk he wears, the laughter
that dances like the flickering of a flame.

But beneath it all, in the quiet
of shadowed corners,
he wrestles with ghosts—
whispers of what his father believed,
echoes of what his friends expect,
a barrage of "You should" and "You can."

His dreams swim upstream,
against the current of commendation,
a silent river where only he knows
the banks are breaking,
the water rising.

In moments of solitude,
he sheds the facade,
the jester’s mask, revealing
the tender heart, the fears, the hopes,
and the fervent wish to break free
from the chains of unbidden belief.
