Final Project Plan: Mark Bartkiw
Influences:
For my final project, I am primarily influenced by the works of contemporary artists like Banksy and Shepard Fairey, whose styles incorporate social commentary with striking visuals. Additionally, I draw inspiration from the vivid color palettes and dynamic compositions of artists like Keith Haring. Their ability to provoke thought while simultaneously engaging the audience visually motivates me to explore themes of societal issues, identity, and personal expression.
Project Idea:
My concept for the project revolves around the theme of "Urban Identity" and how public spaces influence our perception of self in modern society. I plan to create a mixed-media installation that combines mural painting, 3D elements, and digital projection to reflect the dichotomy of urban life: its vibrancy and its struggles.
Relation to Chosen Artists:
Similar to Banksy, I aim to infuse satire and critique into my work, addressing contemporary issues such as gentrification and the loss of cultural identity in urban spaces. By utilizing a street-art aesthetic, I will echo the bold style of Shepard Fairey, while integrating the playful energy of Keith Haring to create an inviting atmosphere despite the serious undertones.
Unique Spin:
To add my spin, I will incorporate augmented reality (AR) elements using smartphone technology. Viewers will be able to point their devices at certain aspects of the installation to reveal interactive animations that further explore the narrative of urban identity. This fusion of physical and digital art forms reflects the complex nature of modern interaction with the urban environment.
Goals for the End Result:
The ultimate goal of my project is to create an engaging and thought-provoking experience that encourages viewers to reflect on their connections to urban spaces and the communities within them. I hope to foster discussions around identity and cultural heritage, motivating viewers to think critically about their roles as individuals within their neighborhoods.
Skills and Techniques Utilized:
Throughout my artistic journey, I have honed several skills that will be pivotal to this project, including:
- Mural Painting: I have learned techniques for large-scale painting, which I will apply to create a vibrant backdrop for my installation.
- Mixed Media Techniques: My experience with combining various materials will aid in crafting the 3D elements, giving depth to my artwork.
- Digital Projection: I have developed skills in video editing and projection mapping that will be essential for integrating AR elements into my project.
Progress and Next Steps:
Completed So Far:
- Research and Concept Development: I have conducted extensive research on urban identity and community issues, as well as studied various techniques used by my chosen artists.
- Sketching and Planning: Initial sketches of the mural and installation layout have been completed.
- Resource Gathering: I have gathered the essential materials for mural painting, 3D elements, and projection technology, including paint, wood, and projectors.
Tasks Remaining:
- Mural Execution: I need to begin painting the mural on-site, which will serve as the foundation for the entire installation.
- 3D Element Construction: I still need to design and build the 3D components that will enhance the mural and create a tactile experience.
- Developing AR Content: I must create the digital animations and ensure the technology works seamlessly with the physical installation.
- Installation and Final Touches: Once the mural and 3D elements are in place, I will set up the projection components and finalize the installation.
By combining various elements and techniques influenced by my favorite artists, I aim to create a multi-dimensional experience that invites the audience to engage with the art on both a personal and societal level.
