Is the grammar in this sentence correct and does it sound alright. Its a piece from my research paper.

To give the roof that authentic Cotswold style, stone shingles, which grew smaller and smaller as they ascended toward the peak, were imported from England.

Imported from England,stone shingles, which became smaller and smaller as they ascended toward the peak, were used to give the roof an authentic Cotswold style.

I think rearranging will make the sentence more succinct.
