Smooth flat surfaces reflect light rays in a special way that is called specular reflection. Light rays bounce of the birro at the same angle that they strike the mirror.
A layer of a metal such as aluminum on the back of the mirror reflects about 90% of the incident light, in such a way that it looks like the person's image is on the other side of the mirror.
