Title: Jollof Dreams in a New Scene
In the land of stars and stripes, I land,
A Nigerian girl with dreams so grand.
Bright colors whirl, in the bustling street,
But it’s hard to find where my two worlds meet.
I stroll through halls where the lockers shine,
With whispers of English, like sips of fine wine.
But I’m lost in the chatter, the slang, and the jokes,
While I clutch my lunch of spicy jollof pokes.
Pizza and burgers, they laugh and they share,
But I miss my mom’s stew, her love in the air.
I dance to the rhythm of Afrobeats in my heart,
While they groove to the pop tunes, a whole different art.
"Hey, what's a ‘suya’?" wraps me up in a swirl,
As I try to explain to my American girl.
"It's spicy, it’s tasty, it's grilled on a stick,
With flavors that zing, like a magical trick!"
In my vibrant attire, bright Ankara flows,
While they sport their hoodies, in a world that they know.
I smile and I twirl, feeling bold in my skin,
But sometimes it’s hard, feeling lost from within.
Yet there's laughter and love, we bridge every gap,
With music and dance, we share a good clap.
In the cafeteria, I stand tall, my heart full,
Mixing pepper soup and the lunchroom’s pull.
We swap stories, we giggle, with friends by my side,
Finding joy in each other, our cultures collide.
In this blend of my roots and the place that I roam,
I’m a Nigerian girl, and this is my home.
So here’s to the journey, the fun and the fight,
As I bring my jollof to the pizza night.
In this great, melting pot, I’ll find my own groove,
A proud Nigerian girl, with a heart to move!
