Project Overview: Congratulations! After careful consideration, we are writing to inform you that you have been selected to contribute to the unique and esteemed Tin Library. This is a high honor bestowed onto only a select handful of individuals every year following a rigorous screening process. As you may or may not be aware, the origins of the Tin Library are known only to the select few individuals entrusted with its upkeep and maintenance.

Below You will find all of the necessary instructions needed to successfully complete your submission to the Tin Library. Please feel free to contact Mr. Trible with any questions or concerns that you may have, as he will be acting as our local managing director for this year’s submissions. As always, thank you so much for the meticulous care and effort we know you will invest moving forward with this project. We shall be eagerly awaiting your submissions!

As part of your submission, you must include three supporting materials within your tin to help capture the “essence” of your book to a potential reader. Ex: A tin about The Great Gatsby might have a supporting material of a green LED to symbolize the “green light.” A brief explanation must be included for each piece of supporting material so a potential reader can know the significance it has relating to the book.

Content Overview of the book can include, but is not limited to, the following:
Description of the main characters (if fiction, you may also include who the protagonist and antagonist are)
Description of the setting where the story takes place.
What is the main conflict or plot of the story?

Tin presentations will begin on Tuesday, Dec. 10th which means you will need to have finished reading your Q2 independent reading book ideally before the week prior to give yourself adequate time to prepare your tin.

Project Submission for the Tin Library: "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Content Overview

Main Characters:

  • Jay Gatsby: The enigmatic protagonist known for his lavish parties and unyielding love for Daisy Buchanan.
  • Nick Carraway: The novel's narrator and Gatsby’s neighbor, he serves as the moral compass and observer of the extravagant world around him.
  • Daisy Buchanan: The beautiful yet shallow object of Gatsby's affection; she represents both Gatsby’s dreams and the emptiness of the elite.
  • Tom Buchanan: Daisy's wealthy but brutish husband; he embodies the arrogance and moral decay of the upper class.

Setting: The story is set in the summer of 1922, primarily in the fictional communities of West Egg and East Egg on Long Island, New York. The novel captures the opulence of the Roaring Twenties, a period marked by economic prosperity and cultural change.

Main Conflict: The central conflict revolves around Jay Gatsby's unrelenting pursuit of his dream to rekindle his romance with Daisy, who is married to Tom. This clash of romantic idealism versus harsh reality drives the narrative and highlights themes of love, wealth, and the American Dream.

Tin Presentation Details

Exterior Design: The exterior of the tin will be designed with a gold and black color scheme, reminiscent of the opulence of Gatsby's parties. A silhouette of Gatsby’s mansion will adorn one side, while the title "The Great Gatsby" will be prominently displayed in art deco font at the center. The tin will have a shimmering finish to evoke the glamour of the 1920s.

Interior Design: The interior will be lined with lush green velvet, symbolizing Gatsby’s hopes and dreams. Various compartments will hold supporting materials, each thoughtfully arranged to create an immersive experience in Gatsby’s world.

Supporting Materials

  1. Green LED Light:

    • Significance: This LED light symbolizes the "green light" at the end of Daisy’s dock, representing Gatsby’s hopes for the future and the unattainable dream that drives his actions throughout the book.
  2. A Small Bottle of Flapper Perfume:

    • Significance: This bottle represents the allure of the jazz age and the hedonistic lifestyle of the characters. It signifies Daisy’s charm and the intoxicating yet superficial relationships that dominate the narrative.
  3. A Miniature Yellow Car:

    • Significance: The yellow car symbolizes wealth, status, and ultimately, tragedy. It serves as a reminder of the events leading to Myrtle Wilson's death and highlights the moral carelessness of the characters, particularly Gatsby and Tom.

Chosen Excerpt

Excerpt from the book: "In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since. 'Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,' he told me, 'just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had.'"

Explanation for Selection: I chose this excerpt as it succinctly captures the essence of Nick’s character and sets the tone for the novel. It introduces the theme of social class differences and moral judgments, inviting readers to reflect on the complex interpersonal relationships that unfold throughout the story. This powerful opening creates intrigue and draws the audience into Nick’s narrative, compelling them to read further.

Conclusion

All components of my tin submission strive to encapsulate the essence of "The Great Gatsby." Each piece has been chosen with care and thoughtfulness to enhance the reader's understanding of the themes, characters, and conflicts present in Fitzgerald’s masterpiece. I look forward to presenting my tin and sharing my insights with my peers on December 10th.
