One of the most fascinating and well-written novels I've read recently is Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. It's set in Afghanistan and provides a clear and moving account of the troubles this country has seen in recent years and how it has affected its citizens.

Often, Chinua Achebe's novel Things Fall Apart is used in high school senior English classes and college literature classes. There are others he wrote, though, that are equally good. The other two that I think students would benefit from are Arrow of God and No Longer at Ease.
