Calculate how many milliliters of carbon dioxide would be produced theoretically from 2.0g of sucrose at 25 deg Cel and 1 atm pressure.

Write the equation and balance it.

Convert 2.0 g sucrose to moles. moles = grams/molar mass

Using the coefficients in the balanced equation, convert moles sucrose to mols CO2.

Use PV = nRT to convert moles CO2 to volume in liters, then convert to mL.

I assume the combustion reaction

C12H24O11 + 18O2>> 12CO2 + 12H2O

So it appears that the ratio of moles CO2 to sucrose is 12:1.

Figure out how many moles of sucrose in 2 grams, multipy it by 12.

Then, V=mole*R*Temp/Pressure

ok...i got the balanced equation to be:
C12H22O11 --> 4C2H5OH + 4CO2.

And then i got the moles of sucrose to be 2/342.296=0.005842moles...I'm stuck after this point. How do i convert this to moles of CO2? Do i just multiply this number by 4?

And if you are talking combustion reaction, you need to use Bob Pursley's equation.

Sorry...I'm actually talking of fermentation which is in the absence of oxygen. So my equation is right, correct?
