A crate full of artichokes rests on a ramp that is inclined 10.0° above the horizontal. Give the direction of the normal force and the friction force acting on the crate in each of these situations.
(a) The crate is at rest.
Normal Force :
1.perpendicular to and away from the ramp
2.perpendicular to and into the ramp
3.along the ramp upward
4.along the ramp downward

Friction force :
1.perpendicular to and away from the ramp
2.perpendicular to and into the ramp
3.along the ramp upward
4.along the ramp downward

(b) The crate is being pushed and is sliding up the ramp.
Normal Force :
1.perpendicular to and away from the ramp
2.perpendicular to and into the ramp
3.along the ramp upward
4.along the ramp downward

Friction force :
1.perpendicular to and away from the ramp
2.perpendicular to and into the ramp
3.along the ramp upward
4.along the ramp downward

(c) The crate is being pushed and is sliding down the ramp.
Normal Force :
1.perpendicular to and away from the ramp
2.perpendicular to and into the ramp
3.along the ramp upward
4.along the ramp downward

Friction force :
1.perpendicular to and away from the ramp
2.perpendicular to and into the ramp
3.along the ramp upward
4.along the ramp downward

Im guessing A is 1 and then 4, B is 2 and then 3, and C is 1 and then 4

Well, you are right on this...

B is 2

Everything else is wrong. I would review force diagrams in your text. Secondly: MEMORIZE THIS...friction always opposes motion.

Then would that mean A is 2 then 3, B is 2 then 4, and C is 2 then 3?

exactly
Answered by Max
Wait wouldn't the normal force for C be perpendicular to and away from the ramp?
Answered by bobpursley
Normal force is the component of weight that is perpendicular to the plane. It would only be away from the ramp if the mass started flying upwards. In this case, artichokes don't fly, they slide downwards pressing some on the board (the normal component)

My teacher had said that all 3 normal forces were perpendicular and away from the ramp so idk
