    As a verb, <i>affect</i> means to act on or to move.  The loss of the homecoming game <i>affected</i> the atmosphere in the whole school.
As a verb, <i>effect</i> means to bring about or accomplish. The Student Council <i>effected</i> new policies that brought many positive changes to the student body.

    Affect is always used as a verb.  My sprained ankle will AFFECT my ability to play tennis.
Effect is a noun. The EFFECT of the spilled perfume was everyone left the store.
My studying for the test had the effect I desired; I passed.
My studying affected my grade.
