In the new version of "The Lottery", the characters are able to overcome their darker impulses and choose empathy and compassion instead. As the villagers gather for the annual lottery, Tessie Hutchinson steps forward and bravely speaks up, "This tradition is wrong! We can't continue to sacrifice innocent lives for the sake of tradition." The other villagers pause, considering her words. Mr. Summers, the organizer of the lottery, nods in agreement and announces, "Tessie is right. We will no longer participate in this barbaric practice." The villagers cheer and embrace each other, relieved that they have broken free from the cycle of violence and superstition. The story ends with the community coming together to create a new tradition based on love and unity.
