By choosing not to continue with the tradition of the lottery, the characters in the story would have an opportunity to overcome their darker impulses and choose compassion and empathy instead. As the villagers gather for the annual event, they could engage in a conversation where one of the characters suggests finding a new way to bring the community together without violence. The others could slowly start to agree, realizing the senselessness of the old tradition and the pain it causes. Eventually, they decide to abolish the lottery altogether and work towards building a kinder and more supportive community. The story ends with the villagers coming together to plan a celebration that promotes unity and love among them.
