Treat the negative sign as a factor, namely (-1).
So
-10/3k = -7/12
is the same as
(-1)(10)/(3k) = (-1)(7)/12
Since like factors on each side of the equal sign cancel out, so you are left with:
10/3k = 7/12
Cross multiply and solve for k.
So
-10/3k = -7/12
is the same as
(-1)(10)/(3k) = (-1)(7)/12
Since like factors on each side of the equal sign cancel out, so you are left with:
10/3k = 7/12
Cross multiply and solve for k.

The easy way to get rid of negative signs is to multiply by -1; thus,
-1(-10/3k) = -1(-7/12)
10/3k = 7/12, then solve for k.
Another much faster way is to remember that you can change the sign on one side if you also change it on the other. The net would then be 10/3k = 7/12
