The shells in Toshio Mori’s short story Abalone, Abalone, Abalone symbolize how humans lead tough and hard lives, but as long as they have the necessary care, the inner beauty is exposed. The exterior of the shells symbolizes the hard life that human’s face, which has an effect on the physical body and mind. In the story, “scabs of the sea” symbolize the temporary conflicts that humans have in life, representing stresses that people face. Though in the story, these are described as “grime that sticks so that even a needle it did not become clean”, the physical and mental stresses human face eventually go away with time.
