My teacher says that mood and tone are not the same thing, but I have trouble establishing a difference between the two. How can I tell them apart?

Mood: http://www.tnellen.com/cybereng/lit_terms/terms/2terms.html#Mood

Tone:

Please re-post if the difference is not clear. It's obvious they're closely related, but not exactly the same thing.

=)

What does tone and mood mean?

Hi. I think that tone is a way of narrating a story. It can be "highly detailed" for example.

But Mood is a feeling that the reader creates towards us. It may be fascinating, interesting etc...

Are you ignorant or are you some kind of weak link that doesn't pay attention in class

Mood is the feeling YOU get while reading. Tone is the way the AUTHOR feels about something.

Tone is the way an author or the narrator feel while writing or narrarating a poem or story. The mood is how you, the audience, feels

tone is the attitude of the writer- imagine how the writer would be talking if s/he were reading aloud.

The mood is the way the story makes the reader feel. usually, depending on the tone of the writing, it will affect the mood, but not always. If the tone is ironic and understated the mood might be heavy and gloomy.

You guys are lazy. I'm a teacher and mood is the feeling you get from reading the piece of literature while tone is the way the author feels about the piece of literature.

Mood is the term used to describe the feeling of a piece of literature. When you read a novel and get a feeling of suspense or mystery, this is the mood you are uncovering.

Tone is the word used to describe the author’s opinion about the story, character or events. Tone can be found in fiction and non-fiction by looking at the way the author describes things and what words they choose.
