I have no idea who Dawn is and where that passage came from bob...i was given a small part from Abalone, Abalone, Abalone, by Toshio Mori...That has Mr.Abe and a narrator in it, but no Dawn..

I read all the links writeacher gave me this morning and I think the shells symbolize peace in nature.? or something alomg those lines..is that alright?

OK, not knowing the small part of the story you were given, I can't really answer. It might be a symbol of peace in nature, but I suspect describing the outside of the shell, then the beauty of the inside, points to something in us. Reread the passage you were given, and go with it.
