Not all precipitation falls immediately into oceans, rivers, steams, etc. Where does it go?

Some precipitation infiltrates into the ground and becomes groundwater. It can also be taken up by plants through their roots or stored in soil moisture. Some precipitation evaporates back into the atmosphere.
