Add the 14x and the 3x = 17x now you have
17x-40=11 you have to get the plain numbers on one side of the = sign and the number with letters on the other side. Since it shows that you are subtracting the 40 you have to add 40 to each side. 17x-40+40=11+40 (-40+40=0) (11+40=51)
17x=51 now divide the number next to the letter into both sides 17x/17 and 51/17
leaves you with x=3
14x+3x-40=11
17x-40=11
17x-40+40=11+40
17x=51
x=3
