Chlorine gas may be easily prepared in the lab according to the reaction:
2KMnO4(s)+ 16HCl(aq)-> 2 MnCl2(aq)+5Cl2(g)+ 8H2O(l)+ 2KCl(aq)
What mass of HCl is needed to prepare 1 mole of Cl2 gas?

According to the balanced equation, 16/5 of one mole of HCl yields one mole of Cl2.
How many grams is 16/5 mole of HCl?

Using the coefficients in the balanced equation, convert 1 mole Cl2 gas to moles HCl.
Convert moles HCl to grams. Grams = moles x molar mass

I really don't know where to begin..
One Mole of Cl2 gas is 70.9g
I have done mass to mass conversions but the mole ini the problem is giving me trouble!!!

1 mole Cl2 requires how much HCl?
Use the coefficients in the balanced equation.
1 mole Cl2 x (16 moles HCl/5 moles Cl2) = ?? moles HCl required.
Now convert that to grams. grams = moles x molar mass.

I have no idea where the numbers you quote came from but certainly not from the KMnO4 + HCl problem you posted initially. Perhaps you should look at the KMnO4 problem you posted. It has no acetylene (C2H2)in it that I see.

oops.... wrong problem... answer..
16 Mol HCl/1 Mol Cl2 x 36.458g HCl/1 Mol Cl2 = 583.328g HCl
16 Mol HCl/1 Mol Cl2 x 36.458g HCl/1 Mol Cl2 = 583.328g HCl
