“Snow,” she repeated. Yolanda looked out the window warily, dazed at what she was seeing. All her life she had heard about the white crystals that fell out of American skies in winter, but seeing them for the first time truly astounded her. From her desk, she watched the fine powder dust sidewalk and parked cars below, reminding her of powdered sugar on cookies. Each flake was different, Sister Zoe told her, like a person, irreplaceable and beautiful.
