if you mean what I think you mean, I would say it is important to know other choices that you can follow to accomplish your goal in case your original plan doesn't turn out right. The way you plan doesn't always work, you'll come accross an obstacle that will get in your way of accomplishing your goal, so it's a good idea to have alternatives to go by in case you don't succeed with your original idea, that way you can try again, and hopefully accomplish your goal.
