                How do you identify important text features about a certain topic or subject before reading the text?

    You can skim the chapter, paying attention to the subheadings.

    I read the paragraph/subparagraph headings. Sometimes I glance a tables, graphs, but just glance.  Since those are important, it lends strong clues to the meaning of the text.  If it is textbook type reading, I always look at the Chapter summary before reading.  Sometimes I scan the text looking for key words.
