Cause of the oil spill: The oil spill in the Persian Gulf was caused by the Gulf War that took place in 1990-1991. During the conflict, Iraq, under the leadership of Saddam Hussein, deliberately released millions of barrels of crude oil into the Persian Gulf. This was done as a military strategy to obstruct and hinder the United States-led coalition forces, who were advancing towards Iraq to liberate Kuwait, which Iraq had invaded and occupied. The oil spill resulted from deliberate and systematic destruction of Kuwaiti oil facilities, including the dumping of oil into the sea, which caused extensive environmental damage. The spill caused severe pollution, affecting marine life and coastal areas, and was one of the largest oil spills in history.
