how do I find out how many feet are in 36 yards? i know that 3 feet equals 1 yard.
You can multiply 3 times 36 to find the number of feet in 36 yards.
You need to learn how to set up your equation and you can convert anything to anything if you know the factor. You know the factor for this problem is 3 feet = 1 yard. We take the number we want to convert, in this case 36 yards, and multiply by the factor.
36 x factor = feet.
The factor is EITHER 1 yd/3 ft OR 3 ft/1 yd. How do we know which to use? We look at the units.
36 yards x (3 feet/1 yard) = ?? feet. Note that yards on top and yard on bottom cancel and you are left with feet which is what you want. If we did it the other way, as
36 yards x (1 yard/3feet) = ?? we would not have yards cancel. We would end up with yards2/feet and that isn't the unit we want. All conversions can be done this way.
