Here is an article on the uses of ammonia. Since ammonia is used to manufacture nitric acid, HNO3, almost any nitrate is explosive. KNO3 is used in gunpowder, NH4NO3 is a fertilizer but is explosive (read about the Texas City disaster about 30 years ago) and hydrazine is used in rocket engines. My advice is not to fool around with this stuff; it's simply to dangerous. One can lose an eye, an arm, or get blown to bits.

DrBob mentioned gunpowder and mixtures which include ammonium nitrate. Other important explosives are nitroglycerin (dynamite) and trinitrotoluene (TNT) which are formed by the action of HNO3 on organic compounds like glycerol and toluene.
