Solve 2+y/7+5=4+1-y/7 for y.

Book says the answer is y=-7

How can this be the answer when the y/7 can each other out when you simplify?

7+y/7=5-y/7
-7____-7
___________

y/7=-2-y/7

This is what I come down to.

1 answer

they do not cancel each other out, one is positive, the other is negative

add y/7 to both sides
2y/7 = -2
divide by 2 and multiply by 7
y = -7
